Things to do in San Pedro de Atacama: tours, weather and how to get there in summer 2026-2027

San Pedro de Atacama is an adobe village in Chile's Antofagasta Region, at 2,436 metres above sea level according to Subdere, and the base for exploring the Atacama Desert: salt flats, high-altitude lagoons, geysers and salt valleys, all less than three hours away. The altitude figure is from Subdere. You get there by flying to Calama and continuing overland, as recommended by Chile Travel, Chile's official tourism site, which describes it as an oasis in "the driest desert in the world".

This guide covers things to do in San Pedro de Atacama, how many days to stay, the weather and how to get there, with information checked on November 6, 2026. For each excursion we link our detailed guide with prices and opening hours. Prices change from season to season: confirm them before you travel. Prices are in Chilean pesos (CLP).

Things to do in the village of San Pedro de Atacama

The village can be walked in a morning, and it is where you book tours, change money and eat. Don't miss:

  • The plaza and the San Pedro church, built of white adobe with a cactus-wood roof. Across from it is the Sernatur tourist office, where Chile Travel recommends checking registered tour operators before booking.
  • The ayllus, the ancestral farming oases around the village, where you can meet the Lickanantay (Atacameño) community through walks, medicinal herbs and local food with camelid meat, capia corn and chañar (Chile Travel).
  • Pukará de Quitor, a pre-Hispanic fortress on a hill about 3 km northwest of the village, above the San Pedro river valley, declared a national monument in 1982 (Wikipedia). You can walk or cycle there.
  • Stargazing. Dryness, low light pollution and altitude give one of the clearest skies in the world; several agencies run night tours with telescopes and stories of the Andean worldview (Chile Travel). The nearby ALMA observatory has suspended public visits while it works on resuming them, according to Chile Travel. For observatories open to the public, see our guide to the Elqui Valley.

How many days to stay and in what order

Three or four days are enough for the essentials without rushing, and the order matters because of the altitude: start with places at the village's height and leave the highest ones for the end, once your body has adjusted.

DaySuggested planWhy in this order
1Village, ayllus and Moon Valley at sunsetAll around 2,400 m: good for acclimatizing
2Laguna Cejar and the salt flat (Laguna Chaxa)Still low; free afternoon to rest
3Piedras Rojas and the high-altitude lagoonsFirst day above 3,900 m, with your body already adapted
4El Tatio geysers at dawn and Puritama Hot SpringsThe highest and coldest, last

Plan drawn up by Viajando Chile based on the altitudes in the previous table. To avoid altitude sickness: drink water, eat light, skip alcohol for the first days and see a doctor before going above 4,000 metres if you have heart problems or high blood pressure.

San Pedro de Atacama weather and when to go

The Chilean Meteorological Office (DMC) does not publish long-term records for San Pedro, but its Calama (El Loa) station, at 2,326 metres and a little over an hour from the village, is a good reference. Between 2016 and 2025 the mean temperature was 17.1 °C in January and 11.5 °C in July; what really matters is the gap between day and night: in July the month's lowest minimum averaged -4.3 °C and its highest maximum 26 °C (averages calculated by Viajando Chile from DMC data).
