The Elqui Valley, in the Coquimbo region, has a combination of factors that turned it into one of the world's main astrotourism hubs: clear skies nearly year-round, very low light pollution, and an altitude that favors astronomical observation.
Tourist observatories vs. scientific observatories
It's worth distinguishing between the large international scientific observatories installed in the region -like Cerro Tololo- which generally don't accept regular tourist visits, and the valley's tourist observatories, designed specifically so any visitor can look through a telescope and join guided astronomy talks, no prior knowledge required.
What else to do in the valley
Beyond astrotourism, the Elqui Valley is also Chile's main pisco-producing region, with several distilleries open for daytime visits, and a landscape of green valleys between arid hills that contrasts with the Atacama Desert further north. Combining nighttime stargazing with daytime pisquera visits is the most common plan for those visiting the area.
