Entry to Laguna Cejar costs CLP 15,000 for adults aged 13 to 59, Chilean or foreign, and tickets are sold only online on the official site of the Atacameño Community of Solor, which manages the site. One ticket covers Laguna Cejar, a saline wetland with boardwalks for birdwatching, and Laguna Piedra, the lagoon where the water is so salty that your body floats. The complex is 28 kilometres from San Pedro de Atacama, at an altitude of 2,400 metres.

With 18,100 monthly Google searches in Chile, Laguna Cejar is one of the most searched-for outings from San Pedro, along with the Valle de la Luna. This guide brings together what the community publishes at lagunacejar.com, accessed on 24 October 2026.

How to get to Laguna Cejar from San Pedro de Atacama

  • By own or rented car: it is 28 kilometres from San Pedro. Buy your ticket beforehand, as none are sold on site.
  • On a tour: agencies in San Pedro offer mid-afternoon departures combining Laguna Cejar with the Ojos del Salar and the Tebinquiche lagoon at sunset. Prices vary by operator and by whether the entrance fee is included.
  • By bike: some travellers cycle, but the road is exposed to sun and wind; take plenty of water.

What to bring

  • Layers: the community warns that it is about 25 °C during the day, but at dawn and dusk the temperature drops to about 5 °C.
  • Fresh water: for drinking and for rinsing; after floating, the salt stays on your skin.
  • Towel and sandals: the edge of Laguna Piedra has salt crusts that can cut.
  • Sun protection for afterwards: you cannot enter the water with sunscreen, so apply it after bathing and bring a hat.
  • Acclimatisation: at 2,400 metres it is best to spend at least a day in San Pedro first, stay hydrated and avoid alcohol.

When to go to Laguna Cejar

You can visit all year round. In summer the water is warmer, but in January and February the altiplanic winter can arrive, with rain and storms that sometimes force closures. In winter the water is cold and the afternoon wind is noticeable. For photos of Licancabur volcano reflected in the water, the best light is in the afternoon.
