Piedras Rojas is the viewpoint over the Aguas Calientes Sur salt flat, at 3,940 metres and 154 kilometres from San Pedro de Atacama, where reddish rocks contrast with the white of the salt and the turquoise of the water. It is almost always visited together with the Miscanti and Miñiques altiplanic lagoons, at over 4,100 metres, on a full-day excursion that passes through the village of Socaire. Tickets are sold only online by the Socaire community, which manages access.

On Google, "laguna Piedras Rojas" and "lagunas Piedras Rojas" each get 18,100 monthly searches in Chile. This guide uses the information published by the community at socairechile.cl, accessed on 24 October 2026.

How to buy tickets for Piedras Rojas

  • Online only: tickets are not sold at the sites; buy them at socairechile.cl.
  • Check-in at Socaire: before continuing to the lagoons you must stop at the checkpoint in the village of Socaire with the QR code and the vehicle's number plate. Without that registration you cannot enter.
  • Prices: the booking page shows the rates when you buy; agencies in San Pedro report tickets of around CLP 10,000 for Chilean adults and more for foreigners. Check the current price before travelling.
  • Fuel: the nearest petrol station is in San Pedro de Atacama; set off with a full tank.

If you go on a tour, most agencies include the ticket or charge it separately; ask before paying. Full-day excursions usually combine Piedras Rojas, the lagoons, Socaire and Laguna Chaxa, in the Atacama salt flat.

How to get to Piedras Rojas

From San Pedro de Atacama, take the road south through Toconao and Socaire, then the route climbing to the Sico pass on the border with Argentina. The road is largely paved and the final stretch is gravel. At that altitude the weather changes quickly: with snow or whiteouts the access roads may close, especially in winter.

How to avoid altitude sickness at the altiplanic lagoons

  • Acclimatise first: do not do this excursion on your first day in San Pedro (2,400 m); leave the higher outings for later.
  • Walk slowly and drink water: above 4,000 metres any effort is noticeable; avoid alcohol the day before.
  • Wrap up: even if the sun burns, the altiplano wind is cold. Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Stay on the path: salt-flat shores are fragile and flamingos and other birds live in the lagoons.
  • See a doctor before going up to that altitude if you have heart or respiratory problems.
