Chillán is the capital of the Ñuble Region, created in 2018, and a city shaped by the 1939 earthquake, which destroyed it and forced it to rebuild. Two of its attractions were born from that tragedy: the concrete cathedral and the murals Mexico gave along with the Escuela México. Things to do in Chillán include art, markets and country cooking, and 80 kilometers away are the mountains of Valle Las Trancas and Nevados de Chillán.

1. The Escuela México murals
After the 1939 earthquake, Mexico donated a school to Chile in Chillán, which opened on March 25, 1942. To decorate it, painters David Alfaro Siqueiros, author of *Death to the Invader* in the library, and Xavier Guerrero, author of *From Mexico to Chile* in the entrance hall, came to the city; Pablo Neruda helped bring them. The murals have been a National Monument since 2004 and were restored with Mexican support after the 2010 earthquake, according to their Wikipedia entry. As they are in a working school, check visiting hours before going.
2. Chillán Cathedral
The cathedral facing the Plaza de Armas is the work of architect Hernán Larraín Errázuriz, commissioned by Bishop Jorge Larraín after the earthquake. Its nave of concrete arches, designed to withstand earthquakes, was inaugurated in 1960, and next to it stands a large freestanding cross of about 36 meters, according to Lonely Planet.

3. The Chillán market
The downtown market and fair are the place to buy Ñuble pottery, basketry and textiles, and to eat country food. The star product is longaniza de Chillán, a sausage eaten in sandwiches, with pebre salsa or with potatoes. It is also a good place to try empanadas and cazuela stew.
4. Chillán Viejo, birthplace of O'Higgins
The neighboring town of Chillán Viejo is the birthplace of Bernardo O'Higgins, Chile's founding father. The Bernardo O'Higgins Monumental Park honors him and is a short trip from downtown Chillán.
