Petrol of 93 and 97 octane rose by an average of CLP 41.3 per litre in Chile from Thursday 22 October 2026, and diesel by CLP 91.5 per litre, according to the weekly price report published by the state oil company ENAP on Wednesday the 21st. It is the fifth consecutive fuel increase, and it comes just as the road-trip season begins: for a car making the round trip between Santiago and Pucón, the difference is about CLP 5,400 in petrol.

Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz explained that the adjustment is the minimum allowed by law and that holding prices down over the past three weeks cost the state close to US$300 million, according to Diario Financiero. The minister attributed the increases to external factors, including the wars in Russia and the Middle East.

Since the 2023 reform of the Fuel Price Stabilisation Mechanism (Mepco), adjustments happen every three weeks, not every week as before 2022. That means the next change in petrol prices should come in mid-November, just before the start of the high season.

How much more a road trip costs with the new fuel price rise in Chile

To measure the effect on a trip, we calculated how much more you pay because of the 22 October increase alone, assuming a petrol car that does 12 kilometres per litre on the highway. Distances are approximate along the main roads; if your car is less efficient, the difference is larger.

Why fuel keeps getting more expensive

  • International prices: Minister Quiroz attributed the increases to external factors, including the wars in Russia and the Middle East and the destruction of refineries around the world.
  • A minimum adjustment: according to the Finance Ministry, this cycle rose by the minimum the law allows, "around 40" pesos for petrol and "around 90" for diesel.
  • Diesel subsidy: the state keeps a direct subsidy which, according to the minister, is around CLP 200 per litre of diesel.
  • Truckers object: the truck drivers' association called the increases "unsustainable", according to Diario Financiero.

How to save fuel on a trip around Chile

  • Compare before filling up: the official Bencina en Línea website of Chile's National Energy Commission shows the price at every station in the country.
  • Check bank and app discounts: several chains have days with discounts per litre; they change every month, so check them before you leave.
  • Fill up in town: in remote areas such as the Carretera Austral there are fewer stations and prices tend to be higher; our Carretera Austral guide shows where to refuel.
  • Consider the bus: for long journeys the bus can be cheaper than the car if you travel alone; we compare them in our guide to transport in Chile.
  • Add the tolls: fuel is only part of the cost; our guide to how much it costs to travel to Chile has a full budget.

What the fuel price rise means for tourism in Chile

The increase comes in a year in which travel is already more expensive: according to the Tourism Barometer, airfares and domestic tour packages rose sharply over twelve months, as we explained in the prices for travelling around Chile. For domestic tourism, which drives the long weekends, the car remains the main means of transport, so every petrol increase weighs on family budgets.

The next long weekend and the summer calendar are in our guide to the public holidays left in 2026.
