Things to do in Temuco: a guide to the capital of La Araucanía

Temuco is the capital of La Araucanía and the gateway to southern Chile's land of lakes, volcanoes and monkey puzzle trees. It is more a service city than a postcard, but it has a hill covered in native forest right in town, a railway museum linked to Pablo Neruda and the market where Mapuche culture is most visible. Things to do in Temuco fit into one or two days, and the Santiago-Temuco air route carried 721,080 passengers between January and September 2026 (+1.3%), according to the Civil Aviation Board.

1. Cerro Ñielol, the forest in the middle of Temuco

The Cerro Ñielol Natural Monument covers 89 hectares of native forest and ranges from 115 to 335 meters above sea level, Temuco's highest point. It is managed by Conaf, was a national tourism park from 1939 and became a natural monument in 1988. It has short trails, such as Los Copihues (420 meters, about 30 minutes) or Agua Santa (750 meters, about an hour), and viewpoints over the city. It is also home to La Patagua del Armisticio, where Mapuche representatives and the Chilean Army signed a peace agreement on February 24, 1881, according to the Cerro Ñielol entry.

It is one of the best places to see the copihue, Chile's national flower, which blooms mainly from autumn into winter. Rates and opening hours for Conaf areas are published at pasesparques.cl.

2. Pablo Neruda National Railway Museum

In Temuco's old engine house, the Pablo Neruda National Railway Museum displays steam locomotives, passenger cars and the history of the railway in the south. Its name honors the poet, who grew up in Temuco and whose father worked for the railways. The turntable and engine house are among the city's most photogenic spots.

3. Feria Pinto and Mapuche food

Feria Pinto is Temuco's big popular market: vegetables, legumes, merkén chili, piñones (monkey puzzle tree nuts) in season, cochayuyo seaweed and food stalls. It is the best place to try sopaipillas, catutos or mote, and to understand the Mapuche cuisine we explain in Mapuche cuisine: ancestral dishes.

Temuco's historic Municipal Market, which burned down in 2016, is still being rebuilt. In January 2026 the Regional Government committed CLP 39 billion to finish the works, with a total investment of CLP 45 billion and progress targets through 2028, according to BioBioChile. In the meantime, Feria Pinto is the best alternative.

4. Regional Museum of La Araucanía and downtown

The Regional Museum of La Araucanía, in a mansion on Avenida Alemania, tells the history of the Mapuche people and the occupation of the region. Downtown, Plaza Aníbal Pinto and the cathedral are the meeting point, a few blocks from the shops.
