From January to August 2026, 42,914 Australian tourists arrived in Chile, 82.8% more than in the same period of 2025 (23,474). That is the strongest growth among countries that send more than 10,000 tourists a year, and in just eight months Australia is already 2,367 arrivals short of matching all of 2025. It climbed from 17th to 8th place among the nationalities that visit Chile most, ahead of Uruguay, France and Germany, according to the foreign tourist arrivals data from Chile's Undersecretariat of Tourism (Subturismo) and Sernatur, compiled from Investigations Police records.
*Updated on November 4, 2026, with the October 2026 release (data through August 2026).* The figures cover tourists of Australian nationality and exclude arrivals through seaports. Figures from 2020 onwards are preliminary.

The annual record for Australian tourists is still 2018, with 52,653, but 2026 is 9,739 arrivals away from beating it with four months to go. Between September and December 2025, 21,807 Australians arrived: if 2026 merely repeated that figure, the year would close at around 64,700, 23% above the all-time high. This is our own projection, not an official figure.
The slump of 2020 and 2021, with only 146 Australian tourists in all of 2021, reflects the border closure. The recovery was slow: in 2024 arrivals were still 31% below 2019. The series for every country is in foreign tourist arrivals in Chile by year.

The official explanation is the visa. Chile's Undersecretary of Tourism, María Paz Lagos, attributed the rise "first of all" to the fact that since September 2025 Australians enter without a visa, she told La Tercera. Chile was the only Latin American country requiring one, and also the only gateway in the region with direct flights from Australia, according to El País. Connectivity did the rest: LATAM flies to Sydney seven to ten times a week and also links Santiago with Melbourne, and Qantas adds its four weekly frequencies.
One caveat: some of those passengers use Santiago as a stopover to other South American countries. The Undersecretariat itself says the challenge is getting them to stay longer and visit more regions. The busiest routes in the country are in the air routes with the most passengers in Chile.
