| Beach | What it's like | Best for |
|---|---|---|

| El Canelillo | Smaller, surrounded by green ravines | Peace and quiet; a trail leads from here to other beaches |

Sources: Meteored and Chile Travel. The Canelo-Canelillo area was declared a Typical Zone (Zona Típica) in 2000 and has its own rules: street vending, loudspeakers, picnics, alcohol, camping, fires, coolers, tents and sunshades are all banned. You walk down to it through a pine forest on wooden boardwalks. Chile Travel advises checking for the green flag before swimming.

Things to do in Algarrobo
- See penguins at Pájaros Niños Islet. The sanctuary is home to more than 20 seabird species, including Humboldt and Magellanic penguins, which can be seen with binoculars from a nearby hill (Chile Travel). Boat trips also leave from Pejerrey beach (Meteored). Sernapesca, Chile's fisheries service, reminds visitors that the minimum viewing distance from a boat is 50 metres for penguins, sea lions, marine otters and dolphins (Mediabanco).
- Walk to the Pirate's Cave (Cueva del Pirata) in the Mirasol area, about 20 minutes on foot along a green trail. The cave is partly sealed for safety, but you can enter its mouth, and the beach is good for sunsets. Next to it is the Mirasol wetland, with birds and native plants (Chile Travel).
- Explore the two Canelo-Canelillo sanctuaries: Pájaros Niños Islet to the north and Peñablanca Rock to the south, with cormorants, boobies, gulls and oystercatchers (Meteored).
- Watch the sailboats in the bay, moored by the islet in front of the town's yacht clubs.
- Visit Isla Negra, south along the coast, home to Pablo Neruda's house museum. Tickets and hours in our Isla Negra guide.
- Continue to San Antonio, which welcomes cruise ships this summer; see the San Antonio cruise season.
A beach day trip from Santiago
Being so close, Algarrobo is one of the easiest beach trips from Santiago. This one-day plan was put together by Viajando Chile with the attractions in this guide:
| Time | Plan | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Drive out on Route 68 | Leaving before 9:00 avoids the worst summer traffic |
| Mid-morning | Walk down the boardwalks to El Canelo or El Canelillo | Remember that coolers and sunshades are not allowed |
| Lunch | Fish and seafood in town or at the El Canelillo stalls | Meteored reported lunches from CLP 7,000 in 2025 |
| Afternoon | Boat trip from Pejerrey to see Pájaros Niños Islet | Ask about the 50-metre distance from wildlife |
| Sunset | Pirate's Cave and Mirasol wetland | About 20 minutes on foot along the trail |
If you stay longer, the coast south of Algarrobo can be driven along the so-called poets' coast: El Quisco, Isla Negra and Cartagena. On the way from Santiago lies the Casablanca Valley, with wineries open to visitors; see our road trip through the central valley and its vineyards.
How to get to Algarrobo
| From | Distance | Approximate time | How |
|---|---|---|---|
| Santiago | 112 km | 1 h 20 to 1 h 30 | Route 68 west to the Algarrobo exit, or direct bus |
| Valparaíso and Viña del Mar | Along the coast or via Route 68 | About an hour and a half | Car or bus with a change |
Sources: Meteored (112 km, route and buses by Turbus and Cóndor Bus, with fares around CLP 8,900 one way in the January 2025 high season) and Chile Travel (1 hour 20 minutes). The time from Valparaíso is a Viajando Chile estimate. In summer, Route 68 is congested on Friday afternoons and on Sundays heading back.
