Isla Negra and Pablo Neruda's house: tickets, opening hours and how to get there in 2026

Isla Negra is a cove on Chile's central coast, in the municipality of El Quisco (Valparaíso Region), where Pablo Neruda built the house he loved most and where he is buried today next to Matilde Urrutia. The House Museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 18:00 between March and December, and until 19:00 in January and February. General admission costs CLP 11,000 and the reduced ticket CLP 4,500, according to the Pablo Neruda Foundation, which runs the poet's three houses. It is not an island: Neruda renamed the place, formerly called Las Gaviotas, after the dark colour of its rocks.

What to see in the Isla Negra House Museum

Neruda bought the plot in 1938, with a small stone cabin, from a Spanish sailor named Eladio Sobrino. He was looking for a place by the sea to write his *Canto General*. Between 1943 and 1945 he enlarged it with architect Germán Rodríguez Arias, and in 1965, with Sergio Soza, he added the arches joining the wings of the house, the horse room and the Covacha. The result is a long, ship-shaped house full of objects from the sea, according to the house's page.

The house also holds the poet's last chapter: on September 18, 1973, friends arrived with news about the situation in the country, and the next day Neruda, seriously ill, was taken to Santiago, where he died days later. His remains and those of Matilde Urrutia were moved to Isla Negra in December 1992.

How to get to Isla Negra from Santiago and Valparaíso

Isla Negra lies on the coast between El Quisco and El Tabo. It has no bus terminal of its own: buses drop passengers on the main road, a few blocks from the house, or in El Quisco, where there are shared taxis and local buses.

Sources: distances and times from Rome2rio (Santiago) and Rome2rio (Valparaíso). Ticket platforms show Santiago-Isla Negra fares from about CLP 4,600 to 4,800, with companies such as Pullman Costa Central and Bahía Azul (Kupos). Prices and timetables change by day: confirm with the company.

A good day plan combines Isla Negra with Neruda's house in Valparaíso, La Sebastiana, and the port: the route is in our one-day guide to Valparaíso and in the one on the historic quarter, a World Heritage Site. If you stay on the coast, also see things to do in Viña del Mar.

What else to do on the poets' coast

The area is promoted as the poets' coast because within a few kilometres it brings together Neruda in Isla Negra and Vicente Huidobro, buried in Cartagena. Besides the house, you can:

  • Walk along the rocks in front of the house, where the poet's grave looks out to the open sea.
  • Go down to Las Ágatas, a sandy beach a few blocks away.
  • Browse the craft stalls set up near the museum entrance, especially at weekends.
  • Continue along the coast to El Quisco, Algarrobo or El Tabo, with beaches and fishing coves.
  • Return to Santiago via San Antonio and Cartagena to add the Huidobro route.

Tips for your visit

  • Don't go on a Monday: the House Museum is closed.
  • Arrive early in summer and on long weekends: entry is first come, first served and queues form.
  • Bring your ID if you qualify for the CLP 4,500 reduced ticket.
  • Ask for the audio guide in your language; the house is full of objects and the visit makes more sense with it.
  • Bring a jacket: a cold wind blows on the central coast in the afternoon, even in summer.
