Is it a heatwave?
Not necessarily. What the DMC issued is a high temperature warning. A heatwave requires location-specific thresholds and several consecutive hot days, El Observatodo explained. This episode lasts one weekend: on Monday 9 cooler weather returns to Santiago, according to Meteored. It does fall within the preventive heat alert that Chile's disaster agency Senapred keeps in place until March 2027, which we explained in what tourists should know about the heat alert.

- Pick your timing: Santiago's highs are expected around 15:00. Do treks and hill climbs early in the morning.
- The coast as a refuge: the Coquimbo and Valparaíso coast will see 22 to 24 °C, against 32 to 34 °C inland. Ideas in our guides to Maitencillo and Zapallar.
- The mountains too: in the Cajón del Maipo and at the El Yeso reservoir it is cooler, but the high-altitude sun burns more: sunscreen, hat and water.
- Water and shade: take special care of children, older people and those with chronic illnesses, and never leave people or pets in parked cars.
- Fire: heat and wind raise wildfire risk. Lighting fires outside designated areas is banned in parks and reserves.

November heat in context
The episode comes after a very rainy October in Santiago and weeks of cool weather, so the contrast will be sharp: Meteored estimates Saturday's high could be 8 °C above Friday's. For comparison, the country's absolute temperature records are in our story on Chile's highest and lowest recorded temperatures.
