Chiloé in a day: stilt houses or penguins

There are two island tours and both cross the Chacao Channel by ferry. The Castro and Dalcahue tour (12 hours) visits the Gamboa stilt houses, the UNESCO-listed Nercón church and the Dalcahue craft market. The Ancud tour (10 hours) goes to the Puñihuil islets, where you see Humboldt and Magellanic penguins from a boat that costs CLP 8,000 extra, and to San Antonio fort. Heading on to Argentina: the Andean lakes crossing

The Andean lakes crossing links Puerto Varas and Bariloche in 12 hours: bus along Lake Llanquihue, boat across Todos los Santos to Peulla, the Vicente Pérez Rosales border pass and a catamaran across lakes Frías and Nahuel Huapi. It costs from CLP 288,089 per person, excludes accommodation and free cancellation is up to 3 days before. Keep your passport at hand.

Tips for your Puerto Varas tour

  • Season: from December to March days are long and the park opens an hour longer; the Osorno Volcano ski area runs on snow in winter (its 2026 season opened on 28 June).
  • Weather: it rains in the Lakes District in any season. Bring a waterproof jacket, layers and shoes with good grip for the lava rocks at the falls.
  • A clear volcano: views of Osorno depend on clouds. If you can, save the volcano tour for the day with the best forecast and use cloudy days for Frutillar or the hot springs.
  • Cash: carry Chilean pesos for fees, the chairlift, the Puñihuil boat and lunch.
  • Connectivity: signal is patchy in Petrohué and Peulla; check which eSIM to use in Chile.
  • On your own: if you prefer to drive, see the requirements to rent a car in Chile.
