Frutillar is the most photographed town on Lake Llanquihue: wooden houses built by German settlers, a theater on the water and Osorno volcano across the lake. Founded as Villa de Frutillar on November 23, 1856, with 22,554 residents in the 2024 census, it has been Chile's first UNESCO Creative City of Music since 2017. This is a guide to things to do in Frutillar in one or two days.

Teatro del Lago and music in Frutillar

Teatro del Lago, built on the shore of Lake Llanquihue in wood and copper, has a year-round program and is the town's cultural heart. Together with the municipality, the Semanas Musicales corporation and other organizations, it drove the bid that brought Frutillar into UNESCO's Creative Cities Network in 2017, according to Teatro del Lago itself. It is the southernmost Creative City of Music in the world.

The Semanas Musicales de Frutillar, a festival with more than five decades of history, are held every year between late January and the first week of February, with daily concerts. It is the busiest time of the year: book accommodation months in advance. Outside the festival, the theater offers guided tours and weekend concerts.

Frutillar's German Colonial Museum

The museum, run by the Universidad Austral de Chile, recreates the life of the settlers who arrived from Germany in the mid-19th century, after Bernhard Philippi explored Lake Llanquihue in 1842. You walk through gardens with several buildings: a water mill, a bell tower with antique carriages, a farmhouse and a blacksmith's shop. It is the best way to understand why people eat kuchen here and why roofs are covered in wooden shingles.

The waterfront, the beach and Osorno volcano

Frutillar Bajo, by the lake, is home to the waterfront, the pier, cafés and the volcanic sand beach, which is busy in summer. From there you can see Osorno volcano and, on clear days, Calbuco and Puntiagudo. Lake Llanquihue is the largest lake entirely within Chilean territory. Frutillar Alto, uphill, is the services and shopping area.

How to get to Frutillar and combine it with Lake Llanquihue

Frutillar sits on the western shore of Lake Llanquihue, about 30 minutes by car from Puerto Varas on Route 5 South and less than an hour from Puerto Montt's El Tepual airport. There are frequent rural buses from Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt. It combines well with things to do in Puerto Varas and with Petrohué Falls, in Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, Chile's most visited protected area.
