Torres del Paine, in the Magallanes region, is Chile's most visited national park and one of the most sought-after trekking destinations in South America. Its two main circuits -the W and the O- are walked hut-to-hut or campsite-to-campsite, with no need to be an experienced mountaineer.
The W circuit: the most popular
The W literally draws a W on the park's map: it climbs into the French Valley, reaches the Towers viewpoint, and passes through the Grey Glacier area. It's completed in 4 or 5 days and is the top choice for travelers with limited time, since it combines the park's three most photographed viewpoints without demanding extreme fitness.
The O circuit: the full loop
The O circuit goes all the way around the Paine massif, including the same route as the W and adding the John Gardner Pass, the highest and most demanding point of the trek, with views of the Southern Ice Field. It takes 7 to 9 days and requires booking campsites in advance, since the park limits how many people can stay per night in each sector.
| W circuit | O circuit | |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 4-5 days | 7-9 days |
| Fitness level | Medium | Medium-high |
| Campsite booking | Recommended weeks ahead | Mandatory, months ahead in high season |
| Best season | November to March (high season) | December to February |
In both cases, Patagonian weather can change several times in a single day -sun, strong wind and rain can alternate within hours- so layered clothing and a good windbreaker matter more than any other piece of gear.
