Things to do in Iquique: beaches, the Humberstone nitrate works and Paseo Baquedano

Iquique is the capital of the Tarapacá Region and one of the sunniest cities in Chile: it hardly rains all year and the sea is swimmable much of the time. It sits between the Pacific Ocean and a huge sand cliff, and combines city beaches, architecture from the nitrate era and desert excursions.

It is about 1,800 kilometers north of Santiago by road, so most travelers fly, with about two and a half hours to Diego Aracena airport, some 40 km south of the city. This guide sums up things to do in Iquique, in the city and around it.

Iquique's beaches

Cavancha beach is the best known: calm water, white sand and a seafront lined with palm trees, restaurants and a bike lane. It is the safest for swimming and a family favorite. To the south is Playa Brava, with bigger waves, better for walking and sunsets than for swimming. The Cavancha peninsula has surfing and bodyboarding, and Iquique's coast is known for its reef breaks, as we explain in our guide to surfing in Chile.

Before going in the water, check the flags and swim only at authorized beaches with lifeguards. Several beaches on the Tarapacá coast have strong currents.

The historic center and the nitrate legacy

Iquique grew rich on nitrate in the late 19th century, and the center still shows it. Paseo Baquedano is a pedestrian street with Georgian-style wooden houses, boardwalk sidewalks and old tourist trams. It ends at Plaza Arturo Prat, home to the Clock Tower and the Municipal Theater, opened in 1889.

Nearby are the Palacio Astoreca, an early 20th-century mansion now used as a cultural center, and the Corbeta Esmeralda Museum, a replica of the ship sunk in the 1879 naval battle of Iquique. Boat trips around the bay leave from the passenger pier to see sea lions and birds.

Things to do in Iquique beyond the beach: Zofri, paragliding and Cerro Dragón

  • Zofri: Iquique's free trade zone has operated since 1975 and gathers electronics, clothing, perfume and homeware stores with tax exemptions. Check the duty-free conditions at zofri.cl before buying.
  • Paragliding: the slopes of Alto Hospicio, above the city, have steady wind and are among the best-known flying spots in South America. Tandem flights with an instructor are available.
  • Cerro Dragón: the large dune that surrounds part of the city is a nature sanctuary. It can be seen from almost anywhere in Iquique and is used for sandboarding in authorized areas.
  • Seafront at sunset: the shoreline between Cavancha and Playa Brava is the best stretch for walking or cycling.

Day trips from Iquique

The Pampa del Tamarugal, inland, holds the best day trips. Distances are approximate from downtown Iquique:

TripApproximate distanceWhat to see
Humberstone and Santa Lauraabout 48 kmNitrate works, UNESCO World Heritage
La Tiranaabout 70 kmShrine and July religious festival
Atacama Giant (Cerro Unita)about 85 kmHuman-figure geoglyph
Pica and Matillaabout 115 kmOasis, Pica lemons and the Cocha Resbaladero

The Humberstone and Santa Laura nitrate works were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005. They are abandoned industrial towns where you can walk through the theater, the company store, the iron swimming pool and the leaching plant. Go early, with water, a hat and sunscreen: the pampa sun is strong. Admission is paid on site and the current fare is posted at the ticket office.

Every July 16, La Tirana hosts one of the biggest religious festivals in the country, with dance brotherhoods arriving from all over the north. Pica, by contrast, is an oasis famous for its lemons, mangoes and the Cocha Resbaladero, a warm-water pool. Both can be combined in a single road trip.

Iquique's cuisine mixes sea and pampa. Try fried fish and seafood at the fishing coves, chumbeque, a layered sweet of Chinese origin typical of the city, and products from the Pica oasis, such as its lemons and mangoes. Peruvian and Bolivian influences show in dishes like seafood picante and in the downtown markets.

In the city, shared taxis (colectivos) and walks along the seafront are enough. For the nitrate works and the oases, rent a car or take a tour. If you travel overland from the south, our guide to Route 5 North helps plan the legs, and if you want to continue to the altiplano, see things to do in the Atacama Desert.
