With more than 4,000 kilometers of coastline along the Pacific, Chile has a much bigger surf scene than its international reputation suggests, with waves for every level spread from north to south.
Pichilemu, Chile's surf capital
Pichilemu, in the O'Higgins region, is considered Chile's surf capital and a regular host of international championships, thanks to Punta de Lobos, one of the longest and most consistent left-hand waves in South America. The area also has a wide range of surf schools for beginners.
Other surf spots around the country
- Arica, in the far north, with warm waves year-round and the El Gringo break, well known among experienced surfers.
- Iquique, with accessible urban beaches and good conditions for learning.
- Concón and Reñaca, in the Valparaíso region, the closest ones to Santiago for a weekend trip.
The water along central and southern Chile is cold year-round because of the Humboldt Current, so a thick wetsuit is a must even in summer -something that surprises many first-time visitors given the country's climate.
