Road trip music for Chile's coast: a playlist for the drive and the sunset

The drive from Santiago to Pichilemu is about 210 kilometers and 3 to 4 hours: roughly 45 to 60 songs, based on the route published by Chile Travel and an average of 4 minutes per track. Chile's coast is best explored by car, with long stretches along the Pacific and a summer sunset that comes after 8:30 p.m. That makes the music almost as important as the map.

This guide to road trip music for Chile's coast organizes the playlist by route and by time of day, adds Chilean songs for the drive and suggests a soundtrack for sunset on the beach: lounge, deep house and chillout.

Road trip music for the coast: how much you need per route

The math is simple: one hour of driving is about 15 four-minute songs. Bring at least twice the length of the trip, so you don't repeat and have room for traffic, detours or long stops.

Before driving the northern coast, check the status of the F-30-E: in July 2026 heavy rain opened sinkholes that cut traffic near Maitencillo, according to Emol. If you're heading to Viña del Mar or Pichilemu, their guides cover what to do when you arrive.

The playlist by stage of the trip

A coastal road trip has very different parts: leaving the city, the highway, the first glimpse of the sea and golden hour. Each one calls for a different energy.

StageWhat to playWhy
Leaving town and highwayUpbeat pop and rock, sing-along classicsGets you through outbound traffic and wakes up the group
Long highway stretchChilean rock and indie, collaborative playlistsEveryone contributes and no one hogs the speaker
First view of the seaA song picked in advanceMarks the moment; many groups replay the same one every trip
Sunset on the beachLounge, deep house, chillout, yacht rockMid-tempo, unobtrusive vocals, it fills the air without drowning out conversation
Night drive backAcoustic, ballads, podcastsLowers the intensity; the driver needs to focus

Chilean road trip music: songs about the country

A Chile road trip music playlist is better with songs about the country itself. Some that work well on the road:

  • "Tren al sur" by Los Prisioneros: the first single from the album *Corazones* (1990), with autobiographical lyrics by Jorge González about a train journey south, according to Wikipedia.
  • "Valparaíso" by Osvaldo "Gitano" Rodríguez: the song this Nueva Canción Chilena songwriter is best remembered for, perfect for arriving in the port city.
  • "La joya del Pacífico": the quintessential Valparaíso waltz, for winding down the hills of the port.
  • "Todos juntos" by Los Jaivas: one of the band's best-known songs, made for singing together on the highway.
  • "Gracias a la vida" by Violeta Parra: for the quiet stretch, when the landscape takes over.
  • "Arriba en la cordillera" by Patricio Manns: if the trip continues from the coast into the mountains.

To keep the music from turning into a fight over the speaker, our guide to road trip games with friends explains how to build a collaborative playlist and play guess-the-song on stretches with no signal.

Music for watching the sunset on the beach: lounge, deep house and chillout

The idea of a sunset soundtrack has a history. Café del Mar, opened on June 20, 1980, in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza, became famous for DJ José Padilla's sunset sets starting in 1991, which led to its chillout compilations, according to Wikipedia.

Deep house was born in Chicago in the mid-1980s, with Larry Heard's "Can You Feel It?" (1986) as one of its blueprints, and usually runs between 110 and 125 beats per minute, according to Wikipedia: a steady beat that carries you without wearing you out. Yacht rock, on the other hand, is the soft rock produced between 1975 and 1984 (Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross, Toto), named in 2005 by a web series, according to Wikipedia.

One track to open your sunset playlist is "Chill Sunset Marina Sessions", an original lounge deep house piece of about five minutes set to sunsets, yachts and the beach, released by ESBUENISIMO MUSIC, the music channel of ESBUENISIMO LABS, the same company that publishes Viajando Chile.

For your own sunset road trip music, the rule is to pick mid-tempo tracks with few lyrics that you can play at low volume while you talk on the sand or at the lookout.

What time is sunset on Chile's coast?

In summer, with mainland Chile on daylight saving time (UTC-3), the sun sets on the central coast after 8:30 p.m., and in Pichilemu even after 9 p.m. Further north it sets earlier. These are the calculated times for key dates of the season:

How to get your road trip music ready with no signal

On several stretches of the coast and the south, cell signal drops out. That's why you need to download your music beforehand:

What to checkDetailsSource
Spotify downloadsDownloading music requires Premium; the free version only downloads podcasts. Up to 10,000 songs on up to 5 devicesSpotify
Keeping downloadsYou must go online at least once every 30 daysSpotify
YouTube videosThey stream online; save them for a stop with signal or your lodging's wifiViajando Chile
Phone while drivingHandling it while driving is a very serious offense in Chile (Law 21.377, the "No Chat" law), with license suspension of up to 45 daysCNN Chile

The practical fix is to put a co-pilot in charge of the music and have the playlists ready before you leave. For a longer trip, such as the Carretera Austral, add podcasts and a different playlist for each day.

Frequently asked questions

What music is good for a road trip along the coast?

A mix by stage: upbeat tracks for leaving town, Chilean rock and indie for the highway, and lounge, deep house or chillout for sunset on the beach.

How many songs do I need for a 3-hour drive?

About 45, with songs averaging 4 minutes. It's best to bring twice that so you don't repeat.

What music should I play to watch the sunset?

Mid-tempo music with few lyrics works best: lounge, deep house (110 to 125 beats per minute), chillout and yacht rock.

Can I change the music on my phone while driving in Chile?

No. Since Law 21.377, handling a phone while driving is a very serious offense. Use the car's hands-free system, let a passenger handle the music or pull over to change it.
