Huerquehue National Park: trails, how to get there from Pucón and what is open in 2026

Huerquehue National Park protects 12,500 hectares of araucaria forests and mountain lakes in the municipalities of Pucón and Cunco, in Chile's La Araucanía region, and its best-known trail, Los Lagos, covers 10.8 kilometers in about 4 hours one way. A heads-up for this spring: Conaf reopened the park on August 12, 2026, but only up to the Los Lagos trail sector, and the Quinchol and San Sebastián trails remain closed until December 15, 2026, according to the park's official page, checked on October 28.

Huerquehue means "place of messengers" in Mapudungun. The park was created on June 9, 1967 and is part of the Araucarias Biosphere Reserve, declared by UNESCO in 1983. In 2025 it received 45,270 visits, according to Conaf's visitation spreadsheet.

The Los Lagos trail, the park's great hike

The trail starts near Lake Tinquilco, at the park entrance, and climbs through native forest to a plateau with mountain lakes ringed by araucarias, such as Lake Chico, Lake Verde and Lake Toro. It is a full-day hike: allow about 8 hours round trip with breaks, start early and bring water and food, because there are no services up top.

  • Elevation: the first section is the steepest; after that the path levels out between the lakes.
  • Viewpoints: on the way up there are views of Lake Tinquilco and, on clear days, of the Villarrica volcano.
  • Flora: according to Conaf, the differences in altitude mean araucaria, lenga and other temperate forest species grow side by side.
