BTS in Santiago: the effect of the concerts on tourism

BTS's Arirang tour arrived in Santiago with three concerts at the Estadio Nacional, on October 14, 16 and 17, and its effect can be felt outside the stadium. Airbnb searches for lodging in Santiago for those dates grew 200% compared with the same period last year, according to 13.cl.

Attendance figures differ between outlets. 13.cl reported more than 180,000 people over the three nights, while the Korea Herald, cited by Outlook India, reported more than 48,000 people per night. There is still no official data on hotel occupancy or on how many attendees came from abroad.

A stadium that first said no

The concerts were in doubt. In July, the National Sports Institute (IND), which runs the venue, had refused the Estadio Nacional for the tour. An agreement was later reached and the three dates were confirmed, with a 360-degree, 600-ton stage set up in the middle of the stadium.

Why big concerts drive tourism

BTS fans, known as ARMY, tend to travel to the tour dates closest to their city. That explains the jump in lodging searches: many attendees come from other regions or countries and need to sleep at least one night in the capital. The effect is concentrated in the districts near the stadium, such as Ñuñoa and Providencia, and downtown.

For Santiago's tourism sector, the concerts come in a year when Argentine visitors fell, as we explain in our story on foreign tourists in Chile. Mass events help fill hotels and restaurants on dates outside the high season.

Tips for a concert at the Estadio Nacional

  • Metro: the closest stations are Estadio Nacional and Ñuble, on Line 6. On concert nights they get crowded on the way out; wait a few minutes or walk to another station.
  • Lodging: Providencia and Ñuñoa are close to the stadium; downtown Santiago has more options and is connected by metro.
  • Weather: October nights in Santiago can be cold even if the day is hot. Bring a warm layer.
  • Safety: keep an eye on your phone and wallet in the crowds at the entrance and exit. Our guide to safety tips for tourists in Chile has more advice.

What to do in Santiago before or after the BTS concert

If you come to Santiago for the concerts, it's worth adding a day of sightseeing. Cerro San Cristóbal offers the best view of the city, Cerro Santa Lucía is right downtown and the Mercado Central is the classic stop for a fish and seafood lunch. With one more day, Valparaíso is less than two hours away by bus.

The Estadio Nacional, stage for the big concerts

Santiago's Estadio Nacional opened in 1938 and hosted the final of the 1962 World Cup. In 2003 it was declared a Historic Monument. Besides football, it is the venue chosen by the biggest international tours that come to Chile, because it has the largest capacity in the capital and is well connected by metro.

For the city, every international tour that passes through the stadium leaves a similar footprint: full lodging in nearby neighborhoods, more metro and ride-hailing trips, and busier restaurants before and after the shows. That is why major events are increasingly part of Santiago's urban tourism strategy.
