Chile stretches more than 4,300 kilometers, which means the best time to travel changes completely depending on which part of the country you want to see. There's no single "best season": it depends on whether the plan is desert, central valleys, or Patagonia.
The north (San Pedro de Atacama and the desert)
The Atacama Desert can be visited year-round, since it rarely rains. Summer (December to March) brings higher daytime temperatures, while winter (June to August) has mild days but nights that get considerably colder.
Central Chile (Santiago, Valparaíso, wine valleys) and Patagonia
Central Chile has a Mediterranean climate: dry, hot summers (December to March) and rainy winters (June to August), good to visit almost any time unless you're after snow in the nearby mountains. Patagonia (Torres del Paine, Carretera Austral) has its high season concentrated between November and March: outside those months, many refuges, ferries and tourism services close or cut back service due to weather.
